Below are four major reason why Nigeria is in a very big dilemma, as revealed by President Buhari. 1. We did not save for the rainy days Buhari noted at the parley with the professionals, that past leaders failed to save for the troubled times which Nigeria is currently experiencing. He said: “For example, between 1999 and 2015, when we produced an average of 2.1 million barrels of oil per day, and oil prices stood at an average of $100 per barrel, we did not save, neither did we develop infrastructure. Suddenly, when we came in 2015, oil prices fell to about 30 dollars per barrel. “I asked; where are the savings? There were none. Where are the railways? The roads? Power? None. I further asked; what did we do with billions of dollars that we made over the years? They said we bought food. Food with billions of dollars? I did not believe, and still do not believe.” 2. In most parts of Nigeria, we eat what we grow President Buhari noted that within the past years, the leaders were not innovative enough to develop the nation infrastructural wise. He stressed that all we did was grow what we and our children alone will eat. “People in the South eat tubers, those in the North eat grains, which they plant, and those constitute over 60 per cent of what we eat. So, where did the billions of dollars go? We did a lot of damage to ourselves by not developing infrastructure when we had the money,” Buhari said. 3. Our military lacked leadership Buhari noted in his speech that prior to his coming in, the military was operated on a very low morale and lacked leadership. He however added that the present administration: “raised the morale of our military, changed the leadership, re-equipped and retrained them; USA, Britain, and some other countries helped us, and today, the pride of our military is restored. “Boko Haram ran riot, killing innocent people in churches, mosques, markets, schools, motor parks, and so on. And they would then shout Allahu Akbar. But if they truly knew Allah, they would not do such evil. Neither Islam, nor any other religion I know of, advocates hurting the innocent. But they shed innocent blood, killed people in their thousands. Now, we have dealt with that insurgency, and subverted their recruitment base.” 4. Those who stole Nigeria’s money are angry The president said one major problem affecting Nigeria at this time, is the fact that many of those who stole from the nation’s purse are angry and would not go want to go down without a fight. “Those who stole Nigeria dry are not happy. They recruited the militants against us in the Niger Delta, and began to sabotage oil infrastructure. We lose millions of barrels per day, at a time when every dollar we can earn, counts. It is a disgrace that a minimum of 27 states, out of 36 that we have in Nigeria, can’t pay salaries,” President Buhari said. Meanwhile, the speech by President Buhari regarding the nation’s predicament, has stirred some dialogue over social media. Below are what Nigerians are saying about the president’s assertion. Obodo Cross Raymond said: “Had it been Buhari did not become president: -Nigerians would think that by now fuel will be 45 Naira per litre. -Nigerians would think that by now 1 Naira will be equal to $1 -Nigerians would think all but one of the Presidential jets would have been sold by now.. -Nigerians would think that by now three million jobs would have been created. -Nigerians would think that by now unemployed youths would have been receiving 5,000 Naira every month…. -Nigerians would think that by now pupils would have been getting at least a meal(including fruits) in school during lunch… -Nigerians would think that by now Buhari would have made his assets and liabilities public. -Nigerians would have thought no more inconclusive……. God bless GEJ.” Ndukwe Emeh Chidozie said: “This is why Nigeria is in trouble and may never get out of it sooner!! The amalgamation was for 100yrs and it has expired (Of course u know d implications of using expired drugs for treating ailments) Now, over the years, lack of unity of purpose and collective collaboration has hindered this nation like a killer disease. We ain’t united for a particular vision for the country. Each region is after their own peculiar issues than collective national issues. Thereby raising unending rancor, tribal/religious intolerance. The high population, cultural/religious differences is rather a source of rancor instead of strength! Jonathan tried to mend these differences by building bridges to unite us but a certain Buhari came in and is more inclined in building walls and placing the north above South as strategy for political advantage. He didn’t just advertise his talk of 97% and 5%. He lived it!! Albeit he’s as well incompetent with his team of failures. This is the crux of the matter and so it doesn’t matter what else they’ll tell you.” According to Abi King, “Nigeria is into trouble cos she is in a hand of a trouble maker. You overthrew a democratically elected government and plunged Nigeria into recession in the 80’s, now ur back with the same brian, with no certificate to lead Nigerian’s again. Pls how can a blind man lead a one eyed man? Which trouble maker is greater than a man that doesn’t obey rule of law? Now ur brainless economic team are suggesting selling Nigerian assets and you must buy the idea i guess, so far Nigeria is in Buhari’s hand she will continue to wallow in deeper trouble.Am just observing.” Oladiji Abiola Dada was of the opinion that: “No one is under any illusion that successive past regimes contributed to the current mess that the nation is right now, take a bow PDP, hmm!! However the buck stops squarely in the court of APC now, the reason why Nigerians sacked PDP and voted in PMB is to fix the rot and not whine and cry incessantly over spilt milk. ‘ By the way just to correct PMB a bit here, the major reason for the problem is because we failed to diversify the economy, relying stupidly 95% on oil, while not utilising the revenue to actively develop crucial infrastructure, now it’s as clear as mud that PMB has no solution to the problem, having the willingness won’t do it, the narrative here should be ” road map to economic salvation” at the moment it’s obvious that the salvation of our economy does not reside with this present Govt. That is what happens when you spend valuable and critical time strategizing for 2019 instead of solving current issues.” Dauda Ezhin said: “ASSUMPTION!!! Assuming PDP is still rulling and oil price crashed from $140/barrel to $40/barrel…then Dasuki keeps on distributing arms’ funds to Bafarawas,Metus etc…Boko Haram keeps on occupying more LGAs in the northeast…Patience still saves millions of dollars in her multiple accounts…soldiers keep on running away from the battlefield…Asari keeps on receiving millions of dollars for guarding oil pipes…Ayo’s private jet is being used to carry millions of dollars in the name of buying arms from Israel…we keep on having incessant explosions in churches, mosques, motor parks and markets…TSA and BVN are still yet to be implemented…BELIEVE ME THE COUNTRY WOULD’NT HAVE BEEN ONLY IN RECESSION,IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IN OBLIVION!” Comr Ibrahim Muazu Shanono said tears was shaded profusely as he was reading this piece, he said: “Indeed Buhari mate this country at Bad condition. What persuaded me about his speech is He believed in destiny as he said “But I prayed so hard for God to make me President. I ran in 2003, 2007, 2011, and in 2015, He did. And see what I met on ground. But I can’t complain, since I prayed for the job.” Usman Hamza said: “They recruit militant 2 sabotage u,they buy food with all d dollar despite d land we have 2 cultivate..but u buhari did nt provide fertilizer 4 d farmers b4 u closed d border..but,i pray may God help u through since u ask Him 2 gv u d highst ofice in Nigeria.” Ibrahim Bello cheered Buhari on, saying: “Carry on Mr.President He who looked at his Past will surely Plan for the feture. Plan well you will end well Patriotic Nigerians are with you. #note that for every one Practicing evil hates the light & does not come to the light,Lest his deeds should be Exposed.” Anyanwu Uchechukwu Charles said: “Enough of this excuses…do the needful and stop complaining,we did not vote for Buhari to be blaming others,do what you promised to do.” In echoing Uchechukwu’s point, Rano Naseer said: “We all know how and why.. We are not looking for that. Now how to solve the problems, if you can’t then leave it for someone that can do it better then you. We are tired of all this fake promises One user named Helpful Hands, said: “For those that are still wondering why Nigeria went into recession; GEJ and his forty thieves ensured that we completely ate our tomorrow yesterday by increasing personal consumption of luxuries like private jets, armoured vehicles expensive food and wines subsidizing petroleum products to the tune of trillion of naira per annum etc. Since the most important component of a country’s GDP is the personal consumption which makes about 60% of GDP. One does not need any economist to decipher that the country is heading for recession once the the price and production of our major source of earning foreign exchange ie crude oil started to drop.” Let us know what your take on this issue is, do drop your comments in the section provided below.
